The present of the future past_

“I don’t wanna go back, I don’t go back. I’ve said enough about my past. I just know that we need to be talking about the future. As far as my past is concerned, I’ve written a book* *Tony Allen Autobiography_

- “…My instrument is my wife. I don’t treat it badly. I always caress it. You understand? If you caress her, she won’t want to part you, she’ll miss you, she’ll like to stick around with you and whatever you want her to do, she’ll do it. That’s the way I take my own way with this.
I am not brutal with my instrument, this is like my wife.”- (LAUGHS)

Tony Allen joined us at the café La Recyclerie. Ignoring the mismatched chairs of the Parisian café and resolutely walking towards us with an ounce of nonchalance in each step and a lot of confidence. Like a knight stuck in the middle of the 21st century. It was not the first time we met the master of Afrobeat. A few weeks before, we were at Studio bleu, sneaking into one of his rehearsals, spying the master and his musicians working on their music notes for their upcoming gig at La Grande Halle de la Villette – A privileged moment –
shooting Fela’s famous drummer and his every move with the torrent of caresses he calls beat. Drumsticks in his hands, the maestro prevails and leaves no room for mediocrity or sloppiness. There is not a single thing that escapes the Nigerian drummer. His finely-tuned ears are precise, alert to every rhythm, every pulse, neat and instinctive at the same time.
One can feel it. Tony has only one king.

The beat.

Back to la Recyclerie, the phone rings and brings us back from our thoughts:

– “Allo ? Yeah… uh-huh... Yeah I will text you Eric’s Number” – He hangs up – “Somebody’s calling me from Unesco, to talk about Afrobeat. I said she should call my Manager Eric. Let me send her my manager’s number. You know I didn’t let you go thru Eric, my manager because that day at the studio you came through Ola Adams. With Ola it’s direct. It’s family… But this one I have to text her Eric’s number then
she must figure it out.” – Grinning faces with smiling eyes following a gentle warning.
Tony does not want to talk about the past. He wants it to be acknowledged. –

“I don’t wanna go back, I don’t go back. I’ve said enough about my past.
I just know that we need to be talking about the future. About what’s next from present. The future. As far as my past is concerned, I’ve written a book*” – He, admittedly, wants to leave the past behind him but he can’t help going back and open the big book of a fully fledged life. His years with Fela with whom he created Afrobeat, with his mythic band when it was still Egypt 70, his solo career, his desire for freedom. – “The Key of Afrobeat is the drum.
It’s a combination of all rhythm. You put them together. I am the drummer so I am the BEAT and I can take my beat anywhere. I wanted to make Afrobeat evolve. We are using 1/10th of what we have as rhythm in Africa you know! I don’t have end to inventing, composing or whatever. I am writing different beats all the time… You understand?!”– What is clear is that, Mr Allen has his own approach in the matter. Let it be known! He performed all over the world, always ready to pass the torch to the next generation. Though it’s not always easy for the apprentice to understand what the master is doing, because of the complexity of his moves. Many young artists dare to follow him on stage. Indeed, let’s talk about that new generation, the fresh meat, the new wave of the Afrobeat music of the 3rd Millenium… Of the future…
Would Fela approve? Maybe not…
And just maybe, our expectations are a little inappropriate…
For Tony, it’s more than a music genre with rules and a specific protocol or rhythm.

– “Oxmo Puccino** can flow. He’s good, his flow is good. We were in London together. Just the type of people don’t tell him what to do, do something on top of what is there.
That’s how it works… ”– Let us not worry about Afrobeat.
Seun Kuti, Fela’s youngest son and successor now runs Egypt 80, his brother, Femi has developed his own style and there’s many other artists around the globe like Antibalas (USA), Dele Sosimi, Fela’s former musician (London), Kingdom Afrocks (Tokyo) or Afrodizz (Finland). Yeah… ‘Not to worry’, Mr. Allen would say.
His words sound like a revelation and a relief to us.

The flame of Afrobeat has not faltered.

“Mon instrument c’est ma femme. J’la traite bien. Plein de caresses. Vous comprenez? Si vous la caressez, elle partira jamais, elle s’ennuiera pas d’vous, jamais, elle sera toujours là. Et tout ce que vous demanderez, elle fera. C’est comme ça qu’il faut faire. J’suis pas une brute avec mon instrument moi, c’est comme ma femme!” - (RIRES)

Tony Allen, monument de l’Afrobeat, batteur historique de Fela nous avait rejoint d’un pas assuré, évoluant entre les chaises dépareillées de la Recyclerie avec un soupçon de nonchalance. Un chevalier planté là en plein milieu du XXIème siècle dans l’atmosphère hautement bobo du café parisien. Esquissant un sourire en guise de bonjour.

Quelques semaines plus tôt on se faufilait à sa session de répète au Studio Bleu.
Un moment privilégié - et pleinement savouré - à épier le maître et ses musiciens travaillant leurs gammes pour leur prochaine scène à la Grande Halle de la Villette.
Notre Canon le mitraille de clichés, chacun de ses mouvements, hypnotise.
Une déferlante de caresses, administrée d’une main de fer... Baguettes en main, le maestro ALLEN règne, d’un ton ferme qui ne supporte ni médiocrité, ni laisser-aller.
Non, rien n’échappe au chef d’orchestre nigérian.
Attentive à chaque rythme, chaque pulsation, nette, à la fois instinctive et d’une précision sans faille, son oreille sait ce qu’elle veut entendre. On le sent. Il ne sert qu’un roi.

Le Beat.
Le téléphone interrompt notre rêverie. Retour à la Recyclerie:
- “Allo?… Yeah… mmh mmh… Ok, j’vous texte le numéro d’Eric” - Il raccroche. - “C’est une dame de l’Unesco qui veut parler Afrobeat. Je lui ai dit de contacter mon Manager Eric. Attendez, j’vais lui envoyer le numéro. Vous savez, j’vous ai pas laissé passer par Eric, ce jour là au studio, parce que vous êtes venues avec Ola Adams. Avec Ola c’est direct, c’est la famille… Mais elle, va falloir qu’elle passe par Eric et se débrouille avec ça” - Sourires. Et gentil avertissement.
Il ne veut pas revenir en arrière, il nous l’annonce d’entrée de jeu. - “Je ne veux pas parler du passé, j’en ai assez dit. Parlons du futur, de ce qui suit le présent. Le futur !
Mon passé, je l’ai écrit dans un livre*” - Certes il en a assez parlé de son passé mais il ne peut s’empêcher de remonter le temps. Pour nous, il ouvre à nouveau ce grand livre d’une vie bien remplie. Ses années au sein du groupe Egypt 70 où avec Fela, il a démarré ce qui deviendra l’Afrobeat, son envol pour lancer sa carrière solo, son besoin de s’exprimer librement à travers sa batterie. - “La clé de l’Afrobeat c’est la batterie. C’est une combinaison de tous les rythmes. Je suis le batteur donc je suis le BEAT et je peux emmenermon beat n’importe où. Je veux faire évoluer l’Afrobeat. Vous savez qu’on n’utilise qu’1/10ème des rythmes que nous possédons en Afrique? Ma créativité n’a pas de limite. Je compose de nouveaux beat constamment. Vous comprenez?”- affirme-t-il.
Ce qui est clair, c’est que Mr Allen a sa propre approche du Beat et ça, il veut nous le faire savoir. Il s’est produit dans le monde entier et a toujours tenté de transmettre ses talents de batteur à la nouvelle génération. Mais difficile de comprendre ce que fait exactement le Maître tant ses mains et ses pieds dansent leurs propres chorégraphies.
Il en a vu défiler des artistes qui se sont risqués à le suivre sur une scène.
Oui, Parlons donc de ces jeunes loups, de cette chair fraîche de l’Afrobeat du 3ème Millénaire… Du futur… Est-ce ce que Fela aurait souhaité? Peut-être pas. Peut-être bien que nos attentes pour l’avenir de l’Afrobeat sont déplacées... Pour Tony, c’est plus qu’un style de musique qui doit se cantonner à un protocole, un genre ou un rythme.

- “Oxmo Puccino** a du flow. Il est bon. On a joué à Londres ensemble. A lui, personne ne lui dit ce qu’il a à faire. Il apporte quelque chose en plus de ce qui existe déjà et c’est comme ça que ça marche…” - Non, il ne sert à rien de s’inquiéter.
Entre Seun Kuti le plus jeune fils de Fela, héritier du Groupe Egypt 80 de son père, son frère Femi qui a bien ancré son propre style et d’autres groupes à travers le monde tels que Antibalas aux Etats-Unis, Dele Sosimi ancien musicien de Fela à Londres, Kingdom Afrocks à Tokyo ou Afrodizz en Finlande. Not to worry nous dit Mr Allen.

Les mots de Tony sonnent comme un soulagement.
